VMware is a US software company based in Palo Alto (California). The company was founded in 1998 and went public through its parent company EMC in 2007. The company employs more than 20,000 people and had a turnover of almost 8 billion US dollars with software for virtualization and MDM in the 2018 financial year. VMware is an MDM provider in this sense.
Workspace One
VMware offers solutions for virtualization, cloud computing, and an MDM software/unified endpoint management called Workspace One, among others. On Feb. 24, 2014, VMware acquired MDM vendor AirWatch and its eponymous product. The latter’s renaming to VMware AirWatch was done accordingly. The MDM software of the same name was also renamed in mid-2018 and is now called Workspace ONE.
After that, the AirWatch name only persisted as part of “AirWatch Express”, an MDM solution for SMBs. In addition, the AirWatch name is referenced in the product name “Workspace ONE Unified Endpoint Management (UEM) based on AirWatch”.
