Wireless DeX: bring smartphone content wirelessly to the big screen

After earlier rumors that Samsung was working on a wireless DeX connection (see the Wireless DeX report by our colleagues at notebookcheck.com), Samsung has now introduced the feature for the two Galaxy Note20 and Galaxy Note20 Ultra phablets.

That means: the two Galaxy-class smartphones not only master the classic Samsung DeX feature — the wireless version can also connect wirelessly to a TV set.

Content can conveniently be mirrored from the Android phone to the TV either for entertainment, or the smartphone together with the display becomes a wireless presentation setup for meeting rooms.

Everphone CEO Jan Dzulko likes to present directly from a smartphone — here still with a cable. With a Galaxy Note20 or Note20 Ultra this is also possible wirelessly.

With the wireless connection, the compatible models can present ad hoc, without first connecting a computer or laptop or dealing with cables. The connection is set up simply via the phone's or the smart TV's UI.

Only on smart TVs with Miracast

Logically, not just any monitor can be used for Wireless DeX. The display needs a send and receive unit for wireless communication, which is not standard on typical monitors.

Wireless DeX therefore only works on smart TVs for now. The actual transmission uses the peer-to-peer screencast standard "Miracast". Miracast transmits video and audio content wirelessly to the receiving device. The basis for this is the so-called Wi-Fi Direct protocol. Transmission from the Android smartphone therefore ultimately takes place over Wi-Fi.

    Handy for presentations

The advantage is that Wi-Fi Direct does not require access to a Wi-Fi network. In a meeting, guests can, if needed, quickly present content on a large screen without first having to log into the Wi-Fi.

Samsung DeX — the workplace of the future?

With Desktop Experience (DeX), compatible smartphones such as the Galaxy S20 or the Galaxy Note20 turn into a desktop computer in one move. Via a docking station or pad, peripherals such as keyboard, mouse and display of a desktop workplace are connected to the mobile device. Apps and productivity applications can then be used in desktop mode, as you would know it from Windows.
