MEID

Identifier for mobile devices

MEID stands for “Mobile Equipment Identifier” and is a unique identifier used in mobile terminals with CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) and LTE (Long-Term Evolution, “4G”). The MEID is a longer and extended version of the former ESN (Electronic Serial Number) used in older CDMA devices.

The MEID is a 56-bit number, usually represented as a hexadecimal value. It is assigned to mobile devices by manufacturers and is a fixed and unique identifier for each device. The MEID allows mobile network operators to uniquely identify which devices are on their network.

Components of a MEID

The MEID consists of 14 digits and a check digit, for a total of 15. Of these, two indicate the region code, six indicate the manufacturer code, six indicate the serial number, and then comes the check digit.

MEID and IMEI

MEIDs are mainly used in CDMA and LTE devices. In GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) networks, the IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is used instead to identify devices. The IMEI performs a similar function to the MEID, but is optimized for GSM networks.

You can find the MEID in various places, e.g. in the menu, on the device itself or on the original packaging.
