Tablet
Our glossary explains basic terms and abbreviations relating to mobile working, the use of smartphones and tablets in the corporate environment (Enterprise Mobility) and security aspects in the use of mobile devices.
Tablet
Portable computer
A tablet, also known as a tablet PC or tablet computer, is a portable computer. Key features in tablets are their flat design, touch-sensitive screen (touch display) and, compared to a laptop, the lack of a mechanical keyboard.
Performance and operation are very similar to those of a smartphone. As a rule, tablets also use the same mobile operating systems. (iPads have their own operarting system, iPadOS, since 2019.)
The display size (screen diagonal) usually ranges between 7 and 12 inches (equivalent to approx. 18 – 30 cm). Smaller product concepts with screen diagonals of around 5 to inches are sometimes called phablets (portmanteau of phone + tablet). Tablets serve a variety of purposes in the corporate environment due to their flexible application options and are popular as a presentation medium in sales, for example.
Tablets from Apple and Samsung
Apple uses the proprietary name iPad as a brand name for its tablets. Another product name for a tablet is the Galaxy Tab at the Korean manufacturer Samsung.
Everphone offers a whole range of different tablets as part of Device as a Service.
