Geofencing
Our glossary explains basic terms and abbreviations relating to mobile working, the use of smartphones and tablets in the corporate environment (Enterprise Mobility) and security aspects in the use of mobile devices.
Geofencing
Location-based service for mobile devices
Geofencing (from geographic + fence) is a service for mobile devices that triggers a previously defined action or setting depending on the location. GPS, WLAN or mobile radio signals form the basis for determining the position.
Application example for geofencing
One application example for geofencing in the area of enterprise mobility is the deactivation of the camera as soon as a smartphone is located within a previously geographically determined production site of an industrial company (prevention of industrial espionage or data theft).
Other automatically triggered geofencing actions when the geographical boundary is passed can include sending messages to a smartphone or tablet, as well as displaying position-dependent advertising or information (for example, at trade shows).
